Leadership Delivering Results for Our Community

Meryl Brodsky’s history of involvement, advocacy, and leadership positions her as a candidate who not only understands the complexities of urban governance but is also committed to improving the quality of life for all New Yorkers. As she campaigns for the 4th district seat, Meryl emphasizes the importance of civic engagement: “To change the world, you have to get involved.” Although it is hard to make democracy work, Meryl urges all eligible voters to make it happen, to make their voices heard and vote in the upcoming elections.

Meryl Brodsky, an advocate for community engagement, is running for the New York City Council in the 4th District. With roots in Long Island and a long-standing residence in Manhattan since  attending Columbia University as an undergraduate, Meryl’s journey has been fueled by a   passion for politics and a commitment to public service. Her educational background includes a consortium of  courses and a degree in economics and politics from various universities as well as PhD studies at CUNY Graduate Center and the Harvard Graduate School.

Legal Advocacy: After a layoff from the NYC Human Resources Administration, Meryl became the lead plaintiff in a landmark class action lawsuit, Barcia v. Sitkin, ___which secured employment rights and benefits for thousands of public school employees. Further, as a district leader, serving on the executive committee, she was included as a party in a US Supreme Court case, Lopez Torres v. New York State Board of Elections, 46 F.3d 161 (2d Cir. 2006), overruled, 552 U.S. 196 (9-0), affirming the constitutionality of state law for the nomination of State Supreme Court judges by judicial convention versus election. Also, in a federal lawsuit against the NYC Campaign Finance Board, Meryl fought for effective campaign finance policies  due to the transgressions and violations associated with the current flawed campaign finance program.

Political Leadership: As a Democratic District Leader in the 73rd Assembly District since 2000, Meryl has successfully transformed her district from Republican to Democratic leadership, actively registering voters and facilitating community involvement in local governance. As a senior trainer of poll workers in election policies and procedures at the NYC Board of Elections, she weighs in on election reform proposals and attends open commissioner  meetings.  Meryl also served as a delegate to a national convention.

She is a member of numerous organizations, including the Turtle Bay Association and Friends of Dag Hammarskjold Plaza as well as serving as a public member of Community Boards. Her grassroots efforts focus on restoring parkland, enhancing public safety, election and campaign finance reform as well as improving educational opportunities for children in her district.

  • Vision for the Future: Meryl believes that to effect change, one must be actively involved in the political process. She advocates for:

  • Education Reform: Pre-K for all. Smaller local high schools and higher academic standards including credit courses at community colleges and other universities.
